IFR Cruising altitudes:
This merits a special mention since so many pilots, novice and experienced alike, appear to …. ahem … require some assistance in getting their flight plan correct. Until notified otherwise, please ensure ifr flight plans observe the following…
Aircraft flying below FL290 on a North and Eastbound (360-179) magnetic course should file ODD altitudes (i.e. FL110); South and Westbound (180-359) aircraft should use EVEN altitudes (i.e. FL140). At FL290 and above only odd altitudes are used. These alternate between eastbound and westbound flights in 2000′ increments (i.e. FL290 for eastbound, FL310 for westbound, FL330 for eastbound, etc.)
North American pilots will be aware of these altitudes from the FAA FAR 91.179 The reference from the Irish Aviation Authority regulations will also be posted here in the near future. Where oceanic rules differ, they should be observed. For information about oceanic operations, please see Shanwick’s webpages on the VATSIM-UK website.
